Safe to spend

Safe to spend answers one question: how much money is truly free after bills, goals, and targets.

The simple rule

Safe to spend is calculated from the same target math you see in Auto-assign.

Flexible pool - Obligation gap - Goal gap (optional) - Buffer

What each number means

  • Flexible pool: available money in Flexible categories.
  • Obligation gap: missing amount for Refill up to targets.
  • Goal gap: missing amount for Set aside targets (only if Goals included is on).
  • Behind schedule: how far behind you are today based on target due dates.
  • Safe per day: Safe to spend divided by days left in the month.

What counts as Flexible

Until you change a purpose manually, categories follow their target type.

  • No target: Flexible.
  • Refill up to target: Obligation.
  • Set aside target: Goal.

Step-by-step

  1. Add targets to categories you want Safe to spend to respect.
  2. Pick target types (Refill up to or Set aside).
  3. Toggle Goals included if you want goals to reduce Safe to spend.
  4. Use Auto-assign to quickly fill gaps.

Use cases

  • Monthly planning: confirm how much you can spend after bills.
  • Goal funding: include goals to see a more conservative number.
  • Shared budgets: align household spending expectations.

Troubleshooting

  • Safe to spend is zero: flexible pool is zero or gaps cancel it out.
  • Goals not reducing the number: enable Goals included.
  • Number changed after activity: activity updates available and gaps.
